A Season of Sorrow and A Season of Joy

I remember waking up Christmas morning last year with an empty feeling; a feeling of something missing from my life. As we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus, it hit me. I should have been preparing to welcome a baby just a few weeks later, but instead I looked down at my flat belly that served as a reminder of the baby we miscarried and the heartbreaking months of trying without success.

Joyful Anticipation

When my Mom asked me a few months ago what my husband and I wanted for Christmas this year, coming up with something proved to be nearly impossible. For over a year, I sat at the foot of the cross praying for the child my husband and I miscarried and the future children we so desperately wanted to have. In certain moments, I wondered if our tears were felt or if our prayers were heard. It was lonely, but still we persisted in prayer. This Advent and Christmas season brings a whole new meaning to my life, as I am carrying a healthy baby boy during the same time our Mother Mary carried our Lord and Savior. You can only imagine my heart as I read today’s readings.

“I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD. I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request. Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD.” (1 Samuel:26-28)

God Hears

If I know anything for certain about God, it is that he hears our prayers. The holiday season is a joyful time, but it can also be a really challenging time for others as they may be facing difficult battles no one knows about. If you are in a rough season of life, know how fast things can change. Remember, Advent is a time of preparation. If you feel your prayers are not being heard now, know that God is still there, and He may be putting you in this hard season to prepare you for an amazing one coming.

Take it from someone who knows personally that in a short year of time, tears of sorrow can quickly turn to tears of joy. The older you get, the more you realize that your most precious gifts cannot be bought, rather, they are both the answered and unanswered prayers the Lord has given us. Let us spend the rest of this season reflecting on the blessings God has bestowed upon our lives. Know that we can always find something to be thankful for, especially now – as we make room in our hearts for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “The Almighty has done great things for me, and Holy is His name.” (Luke 1:49)

Thank you, Taylor and Brett, for sharing this testimony of God’s grace in your lives. Looking back on the past year (or years) can often reveal how God transforms our suffering into joy. Hannah’s prayer must resonate with you deeply. Blessings to you and your little one.

Beautiful message and heart felt. Thank you for sharing something so personal. It was definitely food for thought that Jesus is the reason for the season.
