Our Father

Today’s gospel reading is pretty self-explanatory. Jesus reminds us we need not babble and add a bunch of unneeded words to our prayer. Be direct and concise. Your Father knows what you need.

He Knows

God knows what we are thinking. He knows what we need before we ask for it. So, what is the point of prayer? Certainly, it is not for God’s benefit. It is for ours. Prayer deepens our relationship with God. It reminds us of our need and dependance for Him. Prayer helps grow our confidence and faith that God will provide the best for us as He sees fit. The second part of that can often be a hurdle for some.

Oftentimes, we want what we see fit. The older I get, the more I understand the meaning and importance of surrender. It is through prayer that I am able to grow in accepting “Thy will be done.”

Explanation

When I was a child, a priest sat down the children of our parish and, line by line, explained the Our Father prayer. I encourage you to meditate each day this week on a different line. You may just gain a new appreciation for the words that flow so effortlessly from your mouth.

May God bless you as you go deeper in your prayer life.
