June, the Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The traditional devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary have not been forgotten. Many people nowadays feel attracted to these devotions and make them part of their daily prayers. Needless to say, how worthy it is to explore, for instance, the revelation of the Sacred Heart to Saint Mary Margaret and to live by its twelve promises of grace, peace to families, comfort, refuge… One of them speaks of the heart of Christ as an ocean of mercy. How many times our Lord has shown us his infinite mercy and love for sinners who repent? It is easy to connect these promises to the Divine Mercy devotion as shown to Saint Faustina. Jesus speaks of the excessive mercy of his heart and of how his heart will be a safe refuge in the last moment of a person’s life.

To Jesus Through Mary

We also know that it is biblically and theologically sound in Catholic practice to approach the Son through the Mother. Mary is the easiest and most secure path to enter into the heart of her Divine Son. The evangelist Luke has provided the interpretative key to do so: Mary pondered all the mysteries of Christ in her heart (see Lk 2: 51). I would even dare to say that we could not understand the merciful love of the Sacred Heart without the “primmer” of the heart of the Mother. Mary is not divine but is the Mother of God. No one better than a mother can make us know her son, and much more Mary who is the masterpiece of God (after the humanity of Christ) to lead us into the inexhaustible ocean of mercy of Christ.

As we “navigate” the month of June, let us ask Christ and Mary to help us sail safely the waters of this world to enter into the deep waters of these two oceans of love and mercy which are the Sacred and the Immaculate Heart, and be protected by their promises.

God bless you all,
