As I reflected on today’s readings, the chorus to the song “Nowhere to Run” by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas kept playing in the background of my mind. It gave me a chuckle and revealed a truth that is the fruit of today’s reflection.
As followers of Christ, we are called to offer ourselves, body and soul, for the Lord’s glory. No matter what path we desire, each person will be drawn toward the True North of our heavenly Father’s call (unless over time we have totally destroyed our conscience). We see this truth playing out in the lives of the key characters in Scripture.
· Moses (I cannot because I stutter),
· Abraham (He’s my only son),
· The Holy Family (Mary: How, for I have not known man? St. Joseph: I will quietly divorce her; Jesus: If this cup could pass from me) and
· Saints Peter (I will never deny you) and Paul (persecuted Christians)
The Call
All aligned themselves with the call of the Lord – some sooner than others and the pattern continue down throughout history.
Despite our fears, shortcomings, stubbornness, or lack of faith at times, the true followers of Christ will persevere and be willing to give all in allegiance to the Lord whether it means sacrificing reputation, friendship or even body. This is a clear witness to a properly formed conscience that urges us into a beautiful discipleship honoring our God – a conscience that tells us there is “nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide!”
Live your Christian dignity well, my friends, in honor of our Lord and each other. Peace and Blessings!
