Today, we all live under the strain of hectic and demanding schedules. Our days are filled with countless demands and work that exhaust us by evening, leaving us anxious about what we couldn’t accomplish and what awaits us the next day. Additionally, there is mental fatigue, with overwhelming thoughts and accumulated tensions from the past that resurface, dragging us into despair.
Divine Invitation
In the midst of our weariness and burdens of life, Jesus’ words bring a soothing relief; a divine invitation: He beckons us to find rest: “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt.11: 28). This rest is not about idleness, but about living in a different realm — surrendering ourselves to Him as we are, without fear of condemnation, but with the certainty of being consoled and comforted.
Jesus doesn’t promise to erase life’s burdens, pain, difficulties, or suffering. Instead, He offers something more precious: His assistance in carrying them. The Latin term “cum jugum,” which signifies the tool that united animals to plough together, serves as a potent symbol of Jesus’ love for us in the context of our suffering. Two animals unite to pull the “yoke” forward. This embodies the essence of what Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel: “to bear the burden/yoke together with Him.”
Lighter Burdens
By turning to Jesus and following His path, our burdens become lighter because He extends a supportive hand in carrying the weight of life, making it more bearable. Do not attempt to navigate life’s challenges alone; they might crush you. It is recommended to have a support system in the form of good friends and family and, most importantly, to find solace in God through prayer. We are also called to emulate Jesus’ example by helping others carry their burdens, ensuring they don’t feel isolated or overwhelmed by their pain.
Advent Action Call
Today, identify someone in or around your life carrying a burden, big or small. Take concrete action to help them, especially during this period of Advent and the coming Christmas — this could be offering practical assistance, a moment of sincere listening, or simply showing your support morally or financially. Also, spend time in prayer, entrusting your personal “yoke” to Jesus and asking for the strength to share it with Him so that it may become lighter.
