The Wisdom of God

Dear brothers and sisters, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

The Wisdom of God in Creation

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the Triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the three Persons in one God. The Father is our Creator. The Son our Redeemer. And The Holy Spirit, our Comforter and Sanctifier. The Holy Trinity is consubstantial (they share the same divine substance and nature), co-eternal, co-equal, and indivisible. The Holy Trinity’s undivided unity and mutual indwelling is called Perichoresis in Catholic theological teaching. I praise and adore the name of the eternal Trinity through this simple prayer of Divine invocation: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. To the Holy Trinity be the Glory and Honor forever and ever, Amen. The unity of the Trinity is indeed the wisdom of God.

The first reading from the book of Proverbs talks about the wisdom of God, which is made manifest in creation. Wisdom is the first act of creation. And with wisdom, God created the Universe. In His wisdom, He marked out the vault over the face of the deep and made firm the skies above. He fixed fast the springs of the deep and set for the sea its limit so that the waters should not transgress His command. In and with His wisdom, God created man and fixed the foundations of the earth. The creative act is an act of God’s wisdom exemplified.

The Wisdom of God in Redemption

In continuation of His wonderful acts and love, God sent His only Son to redeem the world. John reminds us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” (Jn. 3:16-17). Christ’s redemptive act, through His death and resurrection, reconciled us to God (2 Cor. 5:18-19) and brought us peace with God, as Paul tells us in the second reading (Rom. 5:1).

Furthermore, through Jesus Christ, our Savior, we have gained access to God by faith and are justified by faith. Jesus Christ is truly the wisdom of God, as St. Paul reminds us (1 Cor. 1:24), through whom all things came into being or were created (Jn. 1:3, Col. 1:16) and in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins (Eph. 1:7-8).

The Wisdom of God in Sanctification

God’s demonstration of His love also extends to His pouring out the Holy Spirit on the disciples and believers alike, in fulfilment of Jesus Christ’s promise. It is divine wisdom in its total manifestation, aimed at strengthening the apostles and the early recipients of the faith, thus giving birth to the Church. The Spirit that was poured out on the believers made them fearless Children of God, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ. It is the Spirit of adoption through whom the believers are able to cry, “Abba Father!” St. Paul wants us to understand this intertwined action or interpenetration of the Holy Trinity.

The Holy Spirit sanctifies, comforts, and leads us to the complete truth about our faith and God because He is the Spirit of truth, as we heard in the Gospel. He bears witness and also helps us bear witness to our faith and the fact that we are children of God. He equally bestows upon us various gifts to aid us in our journey to salvation as children of God.

Let us worship the Blessed Trinity together by reciting the doxology: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”

Always remember that Jesus loves you!
