Miracle of Life

The miracle of life never ceases to amaze. The readings for this solemnity reflect the wonder of that miracle. Words like, “called from birth” (Is.49:1), “formed as his servant from the womb” (Is.49:5), “from my mother‘s womb he gave me my name” (Is.49:1): these words pull out the mystery and awe of what it is to be alive. They portray intentionality, purpose, and meaning.

The conception, birth, life, and even death of John the Baptist were purposeful, intentional, and full of meaning. In our own lives, this is also true for each of us. We would not exist if God did not desire us purposefully, intentionally, and lovingly.

Purpose, Intention, and Meaning

Perhaps we may think that it would be easier to believe that our lives have so much meaning if an angel had appeared to our father in a temple prophesying our birth, or if the mother of the Son of God had visited, causing us to leap in the womb. However, every path is unique, and actually the most remarkable thing about John the Baptist had nothing to do with what the angel said to his father or what his mother knew in her heart. It had to do with John the Baptist cooperating in God’s plan: a lifelong mission that consisted of many choices for God at many moments of his life.

Hope in God’s Hope in Us

Every life begins with purpose and intentionality on God’s part. It depends on each one to continue living that life with purpose and intentionality. We have each been given a gift out of love from God. He has so much hope in us, in our choices, and decisions, And he is willing to risk everything to allow us to choose him freely in love. It should bring us hope as well that, “all things work for good for those who love God who are called according to his purpose.” (Rom. 8:28)
