Matters of the Heart

Today’s gospel from Mark is the account when the disciples are with Jesus in a boat and realize they have forgotten their bread. They become distressed at this realization and Jesus warns them; and reminds them of what they have been through together.

Guard Yourselves

Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” The disciples misunderstand this warning. They think Jesus is rebuking them for forgetting their bread. Really, He is warning them not to harden their hearts. The “leaven of the Pharisees” can be a suggestion of the popular behavior of the Pharisees, who over and over we see as self-righteous. They are often hypocrites in the bible. So, Jesus is warning his disciples about matters of the heart. A warning about trust too, perhaps.

Physical Needs

However, they interpret this differently. They are more concerned about their physical needs. How often can you relate to such thinking? Do you, too, become so engrossed in your physical and material needs that matters of the heart and spirit are put on the backburner?

God is faithful. All of the time. Look past your physical needs and focus on the invitation to go deep with Him.
