Today’s Gospel from Matthew is probably a familiar one. A rich young man encounters Jesus and asks him what he must do to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
It is a great teaching moment for not only the young man, but for us 2,000 years later. It really comes down to this: nothing is to come before God in our lives. It is not enough to follow the Commandments. We must desire and have a relationship with the Lord.
I often wonder, would I have the nerve to leave everything I know and love if God said, “Come, follow me,” like He did to Pater and the other Apostles. I think this practice is a good way to gauge what I may be making idols of. It tells me where I need to shift the focus away from, perhaps.
