Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Andrew. A remarkable disciple, the first disciple, who put in loads of miles spreading Jesus’ word. He was originally a follower of John the Baptist, but made an excellent choice to follow Jesus, instead. As The Chosen depicted, it was a difficult period for Andrew, but he made the right choice for his allegiance. He was martyred on an “X” shaped cross because he did not feel worthy of dying on a cross like that of Jesus. That “X” is currently on the Scottish flag, as some of his relics are in what is now St. Andrew, Scotland, and have been there since the 400s.
Our Mission
Today’s reading from Romans reminds me a bit of the mission of Gratia Vobis Ministries. In summary, we can all be saved. No matter where we are from…we can do this across cultures, and all around the world. But to be saved, we must know about what Jesus had to say. Hearing those teachings relies on people like you and me, and our communities, to spread the Good Word. We do this around the block, and around the world, in our own Catholic way. As you read this, it is happening!
I also like to refer to James when I think of GVM, because we want to be “doers” and not just “hearers” of the Gospel. “Faith without works is dead.” (see Tom Nash’s reflection of November 20,2024). A combination of knowing the teachings of the Bible, and acting on them in our world, is a great combination, with love of God and Jesus and all the Saints rounding out our lives.
Beauty of the Feet
The reading praises the “beauty of the feet” of the people spreading the Good News, as they generally arrived “on foot.” I do not think I have particularly pretty feet, but the analogy is clear, even as I type this in my slippers. Our modern day “feet” can be our videos, blogs, and reflections. Or, it can be our actual feet, as we walk to Sunday School class or to a retreat.
Gratia Vobis supports traditional “feet.” You will see some of the recipients of our donations on our home page, with feet actually on the ground, or in boats, spreading the Good News. We will be asking for donations soon, to help continue our efforts.
This week, make your feet beautiful by spreading God’s word by your words and actions, and have a strong Advent.
