Thousands of years before Lasik surgery, cataract replacements, and other eye procedures, poor eyesight was difficult or impossible to overcome. Even in recent history, it’s not always easy to see. Then and now, a lack of eyesight causes many challenges. So what to do? In the Bible, we learn of scales falling off Paul’s eyes, and today of cataracts being peeled from Tobit’s eyes.
Natural or Supernatural Healing
As Tobiah walked back to his home, he had a natural healing solution for his father’s eyes. Dried fish gall. Go figure! Tobit trusted his son, allowed the gall to be placed into his eyes, and it stung, as one would imagine it would. Next, Tobiah touched his father’s eyes, and peeled off the cataracts. I envision it like the opposite of putting a stamp on a letter, or like removing a bandage. Oila! It worked! Tobit saw the light, and everything else around him. The natural healing was really supernatural. Tobit gives thanks to God for the healing, as he should. This is a natural method/procedure/medicine that shows a supernatural effect. The healing was miraculous and supernatural and God given.
Lifestyle Change
Being able to see changes everything, and certainly changes one’s lifestyle. Tobit told everyone who would listen, to rejoice in the blessing he received from God. He saw the light. When Paul lost his eye scales in Damascus, he too saw the light and had a lifestyle change. Ironically, Paul was blinded by light before he could see light again. The other people who regained their sight via Jesus also had lifestyle changes for the better. In these examples, they became disciples of the Lord, and spread the good news.
Wisdom
My definition of wisdom boils down to learning from others; from both their successes and failures. I’m fortunate to have decent eyesight after my own battle with cataract and retina issues. I did not have to be fully blinded, and then have natural items treat me supernaturally. No fish gall for me! I relied on lasers and scalpels and well trained experts, which are modern day miracles.
The wisdom of the ages, and from the blind men being healed in the Bible, tell me to be thankful for what I have and to be thankful for all God’s gifts. I can be as grateful as Tobit and Paul, but not have to suffer blindness. We can see the light without suffering in the dark. I can spread the good news, and not have to suffer from blindness and be healed. Use your wisdom to see the light of God’s blessings today. Be thankful for the gift of sight today.
