“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” This is a famous line from Psalms, often used in speeches, sermons and films, including Saving Private Ryan. This line struck me in today’s readings and will become my reflection.
Sheep
We’re the sheep, and Jesus is the shepherd. That needs to be said out loud, as we don’t lead Jesus, He leads us. He’ll keep us out of trouble, provide food in safe pastures, provide clean water, and gather us when we need to be gathered. Every day is not perfect, as it may be wet, cold, hot, windy or any type of weather. Keep in mind that sometimes we need to get shaved a bit, to provide “wool” to pay for needed expenses. Our Bishop’s Annual Appeal just started, so it’s time to think about how much wool to offer.
Cats
I think most of us act more like cats than sheep. Generally, cats are aloof, and show minimal affection unless they get something in exchange for affection, like a few treats. Cats run around, often alone, refuse to follow directions, and if led to food and water, they may decline the offer. As far as adding value, the fur ends up on the furniture, and is not gathered and sold. Some people are allergic to cats, but few are allergic to sheep (wool). I would be remiss if I did not mention that it is hard to herd cats.
Today
Today, think about your behavior in relation to Jesus. Do you look for his guidance, do you rely on his blessings for food, water, and safety? Do you long to hear His voice? Or, are you in a comfortable spot, soaking up the sunshine through the window? Do you sleep all day, and wait for handouts when you are ready? Do you spend hours grooming, to look perfect at all times? At night, do you prowl and look for trouble, or do you seek refuge and solace with the Good Shepherd?
