He proposed that they separate and offered Lot the first choice of land. Lot chose the well-watered plain of the Jordan, which was fertile and prosperous, while Abraham settled in the land of Canaan, which was comparatively less desirable. In this narrative, we witness a profound example of conflict resolution and the ways and means of maintaining peace within our relationships, such as: recognizing our common bond, seeking dialogue and understanding, prioritizing harmony over material gain, and trusting in God’s providence.
