Holy Fearlessness

In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays bare the reality of discipleship: “A disciple is not above his teacher.” He warns us that following Him will bring misunderstanding and opposition, but counters this with a powerful, recurring command: “Do not be afraid.” Christ reassures us that we are worth more than many sparrows, and that every hair on our head is counted by a loving Father.

Becoming Like the Master

Saint Benedict the Abbot (whose Memorial the Church celebrates today) lived this exact Gospel passage through his radical commitment to Christ, demonstrating how holy fearlessness transforms a broken culture. Jesus states that it is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher. Benedict’s entire life was a pursuit of this conformity. In the 6th century, amid the collapse of the Roman Empire, he did not seek power. Instead, he fled to a cave in the remote town of Subiaco in Italy to listen to God. He later wrote his famous Rule, creating structured communities where ordinary people could learn to “prefer nothing whatever to Christ.” By focusing strictly on imitating the Master, Benedict eventually laid the spiritual and cultural foundations of Europe. That is why he is celebrated as the father of Western Monasticism and one of the Patron Saints of Europe.

Fearless in the Face of Malice

Jesus warns that if the master of the house is called a demon, his followers will face the same. Benedict experienced this firsthand. Jealous rivals and even lax monks tried to assassinate him with poisoned wine and bread because his holy discipline convicted them. Yet, resting in the peace of Christ, Benedict lived without fear. When he made the sign of the cross over the poisoned cup, it shattered. He knew his soul was securely held by God, rendering earthly threats powerless.

Trust in Divine Providence

Christ promises that the Father intimately cares for us, tracking even the sparrows. Benedict built his entire monastic system on this providence. He taught that manual labour and prayer (Ora et Labora) are holy because God is present in every detail of the day. He showed a chaotic world that when you trust God with your daily bread, you find an interior stability that no political or social collapse can destroy.

Living the Word Today

On this Feast of the Patron of Europe, Jesus challenges us to step out of the paralysis of fear. Whether you are facing cultural hostility, family tension, political threat or personal anxiety, Saint Benedict’s life proves that Christ’s words are true. You are intensely loved and fiercely protected by the Father. Trust Him, and rest secure in His holy promise.

Saint Benedict of Nursia, pray for us.
