Today, the Word of God and the memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel merge in an invitation to rediscover profound peace in Christ.
In the First Reading, the prophet Isaiah describes our human toil and our thirst for God: “My soul yearns for you in the night… we have conceived and suffered the pains of labor, but we have given birth to wind.” In our daily experiences, how often do we too toil, rush, and try to solve everything on our own, only to find ourselves at night, tired, with our hands full of “wind” and anxiety in our hearts.
To this weariness, Jesus responds in the Gospel with words of infinite tenderness. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus does not ask us to be perfect or invincible. He invites us to lay our burdens in His meek and humble Heart.
Silence the Noise
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the perfect guide on this journey. She, who inspires the tradition of contemplative silence on Mount Carmel, teaches us to silence the noise of our worries. Mary did not give birth to “wind” (signifying fruitless toils). She welcomed the Word and gave birth to the Savior, a great gift to humanity. When the worries of life seem overwhelming, go to Jesus through Mary.
Today, under the protection of holy Scapular—a sign of her mantle that protects us—we entrust to Mary our sleepless nights and our toils. We ask for the grace to find silence within us. To listen to the voice of Jesus. And find in Him, through the intercession of Mary, true rest for our souls. Amen.
