Love Over Ritual

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a powerful reality check: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” It is easy to follow rules. It is easy to check off religious boxes. We can attend Mass, say our prayers, and follow protocols perfectly. These surely are commendable. But Jesus reminds us that God does not look at external rituals only if our hearts are cold toward others. Sacrifice without mercy is just empty routine. Mercy is love in action. And this applies to us in our daily lives. What does this mean to us?

Mercy

For example, at home, mercy means choosing patience over being right. It means forgiving a spouse or child who made a mistake, instead of holding a grudge or giving them the silent treatment. At work, it means refusing to gossip about a coworker who messed up. It means offering a helping hand rather than judging their performance.

God does not wait only for our perfection; He wants our compassion. Today, let us lay down the “sacrifices” of our pride and rigid expectations. Instead, let us offer the true sacrifice God desires: a heart ready to love, forgive, and show mercy. Amen.
