The Restoration of the Kingdom

Today’s readings fill me with a spirit of joy, promise, peace, and restoration. They remind us of the need to pause and integrate what salvation actually means, for me, for us, for this world now. Jesus came and has restored His Kingdom and given us the gift of Faith to be a part of it. The readings today together speak very simple ideas, yet very difficult in our busy world, to listen and really get. Throughout the first reading, the Psalm, and the Gospel, you can almost hear the Holy Spirit whispering, “Lean in. Be still. Listen, and be filled.”

Listen

In the first reading, the Lord promises:

“I will bring about the restoration of my people Israel; they shall rebuild and inhabit their ruined cities, plant vineyards and drink the wine, set out gardens and eat their fruits. I will plant them upon their own ground; never again shall they be plucked from the land I have given them.” This is for today as much as then.

God is reminding His people, and us, that He has always been faithful. He has cared for His people through every generation and will continue to do so. We can rest in His promises and experience the peace He offers today.

The Psalm echoes this beautiful truth: “The Lord speaks of peace to his people.”

Then, in the Gospel, Jesus speaks directly to us. While the other readings invite us to rejoice in God’s restoration, Jesus reminds us why, “the bridegroom is with us.” He Himself is our salvation. He is our lasting peace. In a hurried, anxious world, He brings a calm that nothing else can give. He has saved us.

Lean in. He is speaking to you. What is He saying?

Be Still

We have just spent the past month celebrating the Bridegroom who remains with us through the feasts of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Trinity, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and so many other beautiful celebrations. He is not distant. He is here. Do not miss Him.

Receive the peace He longs to speak into your heart. Peace coming through the Holy Spirit, a gift the Father delights in sharing with His children. It is the same peace the saints discovered, lived, and passed on to others.

The secret is to become quiet enough to listen. Slow down.

As we listen, we begin to hear how God is calling each of us to bring His joy, peace, and love to others in our own unique way.

Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice.” In today’s Gospel He also speaks of new wineskins for new wine. He is teaching us to treasure the grace He pours into our hearts.

Perhaps we are also the wineskins Jesus speaks of. He desires to pour His new wine, His own life and grace, into us. But He lovingly prepares our hearts to receive it. He calls us to let go of what is old, what is hardened, and what can no longer hold the life He wants to give. The broken vessel is not discarded. He restores it, renews it, and makes it capable of carrying His love.

We are invited to receive His gifts with gratitude and care for them well, so that His life within us can overflow to others.

In the quiet places of our hearts, He gently whispers, “Receive Me. Treasure the salvation I bring. Let it change you.”

Go

Can you hear Him? Do you love Him? Are you sharing the gifts He has given you with those around you?

The world needs what only you can give.

Do not be afraid. The peace God promises is already yours. You are part of His work of restoring His people, right now, exactly where He has placed you.

Whenever you begin to doubt, become quiet. Lean in.

The whispers of God are still there, waiting for you to hear them.

As you sit with these words and the images from today’s readings, bring to your prayer and contemplation:

● What in my heart needs to be renewed so I can receive the new life God is pouring out to me? (new wineskins, new life in Christ)

Listen

● What am I holding onto that may be limiting my ability to fully receive His grace, and where is He inviting me to let go and be restored? (leaving behind the old wineskin)

Pause

● Like the people in the first reading, where is God inviting me to rebuild, to plant, and to grow something new with Him? (restoration of His people)

Take His hand. You are ready to turn and go out. Each day, pray with Him and be renewed in His strength.

Stay close to Him, and you may be surprised how He overflows into those around you. This is the quiet truth of the restoration. “I am not afraid; God is with me. I was born for this.”
