Building Christ’s Body

Our Church literally depends on each one of us to be living in holiness. Whew, talk about a lot of pressure; however, it’s true. “Joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the Body’s growth and builds itself up in love.” (EPH 4:16)

When we are living in the truth, going to Confession, receiving Jesus in the Eucharist at Mass, striving for holiness, and using the gifts God gave us, we are strengthening Christ’s body. When we are doing the opposite, we are actually weakening Christ’s body.

A Unique Calling

God gave each one of us a unique calling to build up His Kingdom and to bring as many people with us as we can. No one’s call is the same. Think of the apostles, all of them came from different backgrounds, but each were called to do His work. We, too, are asked to do the same.

“And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God.” (EPH 4:11)

Ripple Effects

When we respond to God’s call in our work, our vocations and even our everyday lives, we build up Christ’s body. This is the way He intended it to be. We can’t get to Heaven alone; we rely on others. Working on a college campus in ministry, I’m often inspired by young people who choose to practice their faith. This has a ripple effect to not only make me want to strive even harder for holiness, but I’ve heard stories on it also impacting their own friends and family members. The very practice of our faith can win hearts over for Christ!

What are some ways I can be a more active member in my church? What are some ways I can spread the Gospel in my daily relationships? How can I help build the body of the church stronger and holier?
