O Come Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of the Faithful

Today’s readings bring to mind a recent workshop at my parish that I attended on the charisms of the Holy Spirit. We reflected on how God has given each of us unique gifts, along with ways to discern which charisms are especially ours. One insight that stayed with me is this: our particular charisms bring us joy when we use them to lead others to God. They bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

We were also reminded of an important distinction. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to draw us closer to God, while our charisms are given to help draw others to Him. Both are essential, but each has its purpose in God’s plan.

And Dwelt Among Us

In today’s Gospel, our Lord speaks about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, assuring us that He will remain with us:

“I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”

“He will teach you everything.” What an incredible promise to ponder. Jesus invites us to listen and to learn from the Holy Spirit. He will teach us, guide us, and fill us. He is already within us through our sacramental life. If we grow quiet enough, we can begin to recognise His inspirations and His love for us. And then, through our charisms, we can bring that love to others.

All for the Glory of God

During the workshop, one man at my table offered a simple but powerful reminder: “All for the glory of God, not for ourselves. Our giving is for the Father and for His glory.”

This echoes the Responsorial Psalm: “Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.”

And we hear the same humility in Paul’s words: “Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings.

We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.”

Go Out to All the World

As we prepare for Pentecost, consider setting aside time, after receiving Communion or in Adoration, to speak with the Holy Spirit. Set aside the noise and troubles of the world and simply be still. Listen.

What does He want to say to you? What charism has He entrusted to you, to share His love with others?

I will be praying for each of you as you enter this time of listening, this quiet “upper room”, where the Holy Spirit gently begins to speak.

Anne Callaghan is a mother of 6, five boys and one girl. She is an educator and writer and loves to extend hospitality as she wrote in her Little Women Hospitality Program. She loves to learn or try new things, loves books, old movies, a good conversation and a good cup of coffee. One of Anne’s favorite places to be is by the water, where she loves to meet God in all His creation and beauty. Adoration is her special “happy place”, and you will probably be reading meditations that she wrote while in His Presence, asking the Holy Spirit what He wanted to tell you.
