We often see reports of heroism in the news and elsewhere: individuals risking their safety, well-being, or future to help others. While countless acts of heroism occur daily, only the most extraordinary—those that shock and generate headlines—are typically reported. Consider a pilot safely landing a plane with engine failure to save passengers, or firefighters rushing into a burning building to rescue those trapped inside. These are remarkable examples, but many other heroic acts go unnoticed.
Silent Heroes
Silent heroes exist all around us. In my work as a priest, I encounter many who battle illness with grace, offering smiles and support to those around them, notwithstanding their own suffering. Similarly, those who risk their lives daily to protect and serve the public, like law enforcement officers, are heroes. Parents who dedicate their lives to their children, sacrificing personal desires for their family’s well-being, are unsung heroes. These silent heroes strive daily, in small but meaningful ways, to help and comfort those in need. Even a student who selflessly tutors struggling classmates embodies heroism. The Lord values these simple acts of love and hears their prayers, just as He did for the friends who lowered the paralytic through the roof to reach Jesus in today’s Gospel. They are heroes of faith.
Community
The Gospel passage of today, outside the theme of heroism, also highlights the importance of “community”. A paralytic’s friends, undeterred by the crowded house, created an opening in the roof to lower their friend before Jesus. They represent a faith that perseveres and finds creative solutions to bring others to Christ. These men exemplify true Christian friendship, intercessory prayer, and the willingness to support those who cannot manage alone. This is the beauty of a worshipping community. Jesus, seeing their collective faith, heals the paralytic. This shows us that forgiveness and healing can come not only from our own faith but also from the faith of those around us, offering hope and encouragement as we learn to intercede for one another. God looks upon the faith of our community to show us mercy and grace.
Do not give up on simple acts of kindness and gestures of support to others. You are a hero. Never underestimate the importance of praying or worshipping as a community, as well as interceding for others.
