In both readings today, we see the pursuit of wisdom. In the first reading, Solomon asks wisdom from God and is granted it to reign over the kingdom of Israel. The Gospel shows the people receiving an overflowing wisdom from Our Lord in His teaching. The people are so eager for His presence that they barely leave the disciples time to eat. Jesus calls them to go to a deserted place with Him.
Rest and Reflect
This call is something we should reflect upon as Lent is quickly approaching. Even those laboring in God’s service must take time alone with Jesus in a deserted place. This is even more true for those in secular careers. By our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we must step away from the day-to-day activities and rest with Jesus.
To Victory
We can also take inspiration from the crowd. Upon Jesus and the disciples leaving, the crowd runs ahead of them to this deserted place. They are willing to leave behind their comfort and plans to be with Jesus. He is their one goal and consolation. We must be willing to pursue Jesus into the desert in Lent. There, we shall receive an overflowing abundance of heavenly grace and wisdom. There, He shall shepherd us as His own flock and lead us to a share in His glorious victory on Easter Sunday.
