A Time to Renew

“Make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.” As I reflect on these words, my mind goes to Lent. What else is Lent other than a time to renew the promptings and true desires of my own heart and spirit? What else is it other than turning back to the face of Jesus and allowing Him to fill me once again?

In these days, it can be easy to become swallowed up by the to-do lists, even when it comes from a good place. I recognize that what matters most is not so much what I’m doing, but rather where I set my gaze. Where is my gaze? To whom do I look?

Gaze

Yesterday, as I sat in adoration, I looked at Him. I looked at Him who loves me. It was a quiet and peaceful exchange. Quiet. Hidden. Ordinary. And yet somehow, that moment was probably the most crucial moment of my day.

I pray and hope that this Lent, His Face may renew mine. When I look at His Face, I pray and hope that it may cause me to pause. I pray and hope that it may fill my soul with the desire to serve and to humble myself. Is that not the reading of today? “The greatest among you must be your servant.” May His face and the face of Our Lady as she pondered His be the face to which I look. Jesus Christ, face of the Father, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything.
