Faith: Assurance in Hope

What is the need for our faithfulness and loyalty in the face of an uncertain future? If the world is limited and time-bound, and the future of that temporality remains uncertain, what should be our best attitude? Should we choose a life of indifference and recklessness, or take the path of loyalty and discipline with the firm hope that this uncertain future will never let us down? Why must we make sacrifices with the unpredictable certainty that honesty pays off, when we can seize every opportunity for responsibility that comes our way.

Insurance

A man paid for health insurance for many years, but never went to the hospital during those years. He considered it a waste of money since he never once used his policy. So, he decided not to pay anymore, because it was useless. Unfortunately for him, that was the year he was diagnosed with a serious illness.

When we pay for insurance today in the face of an uncertain future, when we make sacrifices to raise our children to be good and successful people, when we discipline ourselves through exercise and diet to stay fit, we do so with the hope of uncertain success. This shows that our attitude toward this uncertain hope shapes our lives. Like a faithful steward who acts responsibly in the absence of his master, however, this hope does not let us down. This uncertainty makes us do the right thing, without regret, but with the conviction that we are not losing anything. It also helps us prove reliable in the face of all challenges and temptations, even when no one is looking. This uncertainty breeds faith. And faith here is not a blind search in the darkness of uncertainty. But rather a perfect response to our search for meaning in the face of uncertainty.

Faith

Faith makes us recognize the limitedness and temporariness of the world as strangers and exiles who are always looking for a way home. It makes us always ready to make sacrifices and take on challenges for a better today, even if the future is not in sight. This does not mean that faith is an irrational grasping at false hope. It is a gift from God that makes us accept our humanity with confidence in God’s divinity. And thus reassures us that even if we are limited, we can still trust and be trustworthy. For in faith, we not only cling to God, God clings to us. We not only count on God, God counts on us. And he will never be ashamed to call himself our God.
