At His Feet

The truth of our call to worship God in His Goodness and Beauty is evident in all of creation, and a call to unity is present everywhere. Just think of the good gifts of nature, life, and other humans which we receive throughout our whole life’s journey. As St. Paul says: “Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.” Romans 1: 20.

As we know, and have experienced in our lives, all creation points to this great truth of God’s generosity and fruitfulness. This is something given to all people, regardless of the disorder or painful circumstances of their life situations. This is why St. Paul can say: “As a result, they [those who suppress truth with wickedness] have no excuse; for although they knew God, they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened.” Romans 1: 20-21.

Lack Trust

Lucifer was very great, but wanted to be above God, and thus attaches to his own will and doesn’t let go. Humans, in seeing this greatness of God in all creation including our own selves, are called to prostrate ourselves before Him, worshipping with our whole being His Goodness and Beauty. However, like Lucifer, we lack trust in God’s will, and attach ourselves to our will, believing in our hearts a lie that we must “take while we can” as God will not satisfy us. One of the most common ways that humans do this is by attaching themselves to a will for sexual pleasure, one of God’s best gifts, for its own sake, and separated from the context for which it was intended on Earth: unitive and procreative purposes between married men and women. As a result, as St. Paul says: “Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” Romans 1: 24-25.

Love and Communion with Others

God gave us our sexuality to show us with clarity the ordered wildness of His desire for union with us. For if we experience these desires powerfully, then in an infinite way his desire outstrips ours in intensity and purity. Our sexuality is so closely tied up with our vocation in life, which is to love and communion with God and others, that the Catechism of the Catholic Church says in point 2332: “Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul. … the aptitude for forming bonds of communion with others.” With this statement, it becomes all the clearer why when this gift is misused, we will be degraded. When one is in error, especially regarding such a grave matter, the saving and merciful option is to show the sinner that the fruits of his willful decision to disobey God’s perfect plan are impurity and degradation, otherwise, they may very well die the death, seeing no reason to repent in their lifetime.

Grow in Chastity

To be tempered in this truth, and to grow in chastity, let us place ourselves at the feet of His crucified body on the cross, at once to subordinate our will below His, and at another to be where His precious blood runs to. With His heart beating, naked body torn and stretched violently, metal spikes pinning Him in a position exposed to all; Jesus seeks to receive us here body and soul, especially in our sin, and in turn give back to us fully. Let us try to daily drink from this deep reality now in our earthly lives, and then forever in eternity.
