Did You Mean “All”?

Today’s reading from Deuteronomy (6:4-13), is one of the hardest readings for me to take to heart.

“Hear, O Israel. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you should love the Lord, your God, with all of your heart and all your soul and all your strength.” And make sure you tell everyone you know to do the same.

All your heart, like 100%? How can I spread out my love that way. I have a wife, friends, children, and grandchildren. So how can I move all that Love to the Lord? Do I have to remove some from my family to get to 100% for the Lord? Maybe this is just my engineering brain taking over and making me overthink it. I do not think the Lord would want me to unlove my family to shift that love to the Him (Jesus), but at the end of days I hope I can make that move, to rest in glorious eternity with Him.

As providence would have it, I had brunch with an old friend and her husband, last Saturday. On the first day I met her, the Bible study verse of the Day was the one for today. I still had that tough problem to embrace this Bible verse and that was almost 15 years ago.

For now, so I don’ t beat myself up, I will do my best to love fully, as God would want me to. Divide my love accordingly but know that it all comes from Him. To use his love wisely, like a sound financial investment…to use my resources accordingly. His love is super abundant, unlike our financial resources, so the analogy is not perfect, but perfect enough for today.
