How to Discern

Practical Tips for Discernment: In today’s Gospel our Lord spends an entire night in prayer before choosing His 12 disciples. Like Our Lord, we should also pray and ask the Holy Spirit for light before making a big decision. But how do you actually do that?

First, you should set aside a few days where you will spend at least part of your time for the day discerning in prayer. If, for example, you are considering moving, ask the Lord if He thinks you should move. Remain silent and alert in prayer for Gods interior movements. Tell Him all the good and bad things about the place you want to move. Do you feel peace during your prayer? Do you feel drawn one way or another? When you think you have an answer, do you feel an increase in faith, hope, and love? Or are you anxious and fearful? These are all good ways to discern Gods voice and will for your life. You should pray about the big decision for several days and see if a clear pattern arises. This is why it is also so important to keep a journal, as God often speaks to us in small movements over time where you can look back and see a clear pattern.

Trust in the Lord’s Guidance

In the Gospel of John, Our Lord says: “My sheep know my voice.” -Jn 10:27.

Discerning Gods voice may be difficult at first. But, as you develop and maintain a daily habit of prayer, it will become easier to know how God speaks to you and makes His will clear.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.” -Psalm 119:105

It’s also important to remember that God says His words are a lamp for our feet. He does not say His words are the sun to our feet. He does not illumine the entire way. Often, He gives enough grace and light for only the next step! We must take the step He is showing us and trust He will take care of us and give us grace for the next step when it is time to make it!

Lastly, St. Ignatius of Loyola has what’s called the Rules for Discernment of Spirits. The entire list of rules are linked here. These are very helpful in discerning who is speaking to you, God or the devil.

Holy Spirit, have mercy on us and give us light and wisdom to see Your will in our life!
